Basement Movie Room
January 10, 2020: egress window has been installed, Jamie and her mom surprised me by carrying all of the 2x4's downstairs... I guess it's time to get started!
A ridiculously great Craigslist find--two separate Atlantic Technology speaker systems, each with a 15" subwoofer. Retailed over $10k new, got them for $600 total.
I had to re-route the plumbing slightly so that it would fit inside the future column.
And done.
I'm going to have to re-route the ductwork a bit, also.
Workspace is set up, wall lines (where the future walls are going to be) are taped to the floor.
Plastic tarp and box fan filter--worked great to minimize the dust.
Firing nails into concrete with .22 caliber power loads is pretty cathartic after a stressful day (or week). Time to start framing!
Floating walls are required in Colorado, since the soil can shift over time. It was easy once I got the hang of it.
Supervisor ALWAYS on my back...
...keeping my speed and accuracy on point! :)
Moving along...
This entire wall will swing in, revealing a secret lounge or something (my 2021 project).
My supervisor and I finished the electrical, now it's on to the audio/video wiring, insulation, and OSB sheathing.
I chose Rockwool insulation--it's fire- and moisture-resistant in a way that fiberglass simply isn’t. Slightly more costly, but since I do all of this work myself, that was not much of a factor.
Insulation is in, audio/video wiring is done, speakers and subwoofers are good-to-go--sounds amazing! Like… genuinely INCREDIBLE.
MemBrain vapor barrier installation... lots of cutting and stapling for me.
Starting on the OSB sheathing installation... I saw this being used in a modern home in an issue of Dwell magazine, and I thought it looked so cool--plus it would be easy for one person to work with/install (using 2' x 4' sheets).
I love how it turned out, and it's crazy durable—especially since this room will double as Lily’s playroom, too.
Sheathing is done, speakers re-connected, 85" QLED (on swing-out, articulating wall mount--since we still need access to the egress window) is installed.
Secret wall entrance to the future secret lounge open...
...and secret wall entrance to the future secret lounge closed.
Extra storage.

Painting is done--this is the one part I did NOT do, I figure it made more sense for a professional to get it done in a week than for me to take another year on this step... I chose a dark forest green for the walls, and black for the exposed ceiling joists. Raw cedar for the trim work.

Trim work started--I love doing this type of work, it appeals to my meticulous, OCD personality type LOL.

Almost done...

New carpet is in! Also giant bean bag, sleeper sofa, fuzzy blanket... check.
A fun update to the basement playroom/media room: I built a 138" diagonal spandex screen (Jamie helped, too) ! It works perfectly, and the sound from the speakers goes right through it.
The screen, wrapped in spandex and installed.
Movie time!
